VHF | communications
VHF, in full very high frequency, conventionally defined portion of the electromagnetic spectrum including any radiation with a wavelength between 1 and 10 metres and a frequency between 300 and 30 megahertz. VHF signals are widely employed for television and radio transmissions. In the United States and Canada, television stations that broadcast on channels 2 through 13 use VHF frequencies, as do FM radio stations. Many amateur radio operators also transmit on frequencies within the VHF band.VHF waves, unlike longer waves, are not strongly reflected from the atmosphere; therefore, they do not bend readily around the Earth’s curvature and cannot be transmitted beyond the horizon. Their range is further limited by their inability to pass through hills or large structures. Accordingly, VHF waves are limited to use in short-range, line-of-sight communications, including radio and television broadcasting, and in electronic navigation systems. They are especially suited to such applications because their reception is not impaired by random electromagnetic noise (“static”) of longer wavelengths. Because of their limited transmission range, VHF signals of the same frequency can be used by transmitters several hundred miles apart without interfering with one another. See also UHF.

VHF vs UHF – What’s the difference
What is Digital Radio?
What is licence free radio?
Very high frequency (VHF) is the ITU designation for the range of radio frequency electromagnetic waves (radio waves) from 30 to 300 megahertz (MHz), with corresponding wavelengths of ten meters to one meter. They travel approximately upto 160 km.
#VHF radio waves propagate mainly by using the line-of-sight communication and that’s why in maritime communication, air navigation systems the mostly used frequency is VHF. As a result, they are blocked by hills and mountains.
Common uses for radio waves in the VHF band are:-
Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB)
FM radio broadcasting
The VHF band is the first band at which efficient transmitting antennas are small enough that they can be mounted on vehicles and portable devices, so the band is used for two-way land mobile radio systems, such as walkie-talkies, and two way radio communication with aircraft (Air band) and ships (marine radio). Occasionally, when conditions are right, VHF waves can travel long distances by troposphere ducting due to refraction by temperature gradients in the atmosphere.
Ultra high frequency (U#HF) is the ITU designation for radio frequencies in the range between 300 megahertz (MHz) and 3000 megahertz or 3 gigahertz (GHz), also known as the decimetre band as the wavelengths range from one meter to one tenth of a meter (one decimetre). As mentioned they work spectacular when used in any multiplex area because the signals are so powerful that can penetrate through bricks.
Since the wavelengths of UHF waves are comparable to the size of buildings, trees, vehicles and other common objects, reflection and diffraction from these objects can cause fading due to multi path propagation, especially in built-up urban areas. Occasionally when conditions are right, UHF radio waves can travel long distances by troposphere ducting as the atmosphere warms and cools throughout the day.
